2012 Corn Maze

The 2012 Gearhard Farms Corn Maze had a dual theme to honor two very active and deserving youth organizations which both celebrated 100 years of service!  First is Pennsylvania’s 4-H program, whose symbol was the first shape in the maze, the 4-leaf clover.  4-H is a youth development program offering a multitude of experiences to youth ages 5 – 18. The 4 “H’s” stand for Head, Heart, Hands and Health. Some of the interest areas include; entomology, conservation, livestock, sewing, cooking, photography, rocketry, gardening, archery, rifle shooting, art, baking, government, public speaking, woodworking  and more. The projects culminate in competitions at the local county fairs to regional shows and to the state farm show and some areas reach the national level. Participants gain strong leadership skills through countless opportunities at various club functions.

The second honoree is Girls Scouts of America, whose symbol was our second shape. It was located near the exit and could be recognized as the famous Girl Scout shortbread cookie in the shape of the trefoil. This organization grew from one woman’s vision; her story is remarkable.  Juliette Gordon Lowe’s vision, diligence and inspiration developed into a nationwide program of community based education, training and service for girls. Through individualized programs and as part of a troop, girls can choose a wide variety of subjects to earn patches toward advancing levels of achievement.  Some of the areas include environment, government, arts and crafts, cooking, cultural programs and more. There is always focus on decision making, leadership skills and civic duty as well as providing opportunities for fun and friendship.

Congratulations to both organizations and to all those millions of adult volunteers who support them!

Best wishes for a strong and active future!
